'Can say whatever he wants,' Canelo Alvarez finally responds to retired undefeated boxer following constant criticism

Canelo Alvarez  is one of the most revered boxers in the modern history of the sport. With a sturdy 60-2-2, 39 KOs stat, he is the epitome of boxing. ESPN rates him the #4 pound-for-pound fighter. At 33, Alvarez remains the fight to make. However, recent times have seen him catch substantial heat for nitpicking opponents. Prime among the accusers is retiree  Andre Ward .

In a manner similar to his not rematching Dmitry Bivol after 2022, Alvarez has waited out David Benavidez. Despite Benavidez urging the pairing to be what Alvarez needs, the latter now faces Jaime Munguia on May 4th in Las Vegas. The all-Mexican clash on Cinco de Mayo weekend is a first, for a title above 160 pounds. Currently here’s what Alvarez thinks of Ward’s criticism of that –

I have nothing to say [on Ward]...he can say whatever he wants...maybe he wants a fight with me, but he's never gonna get it. What else [but jealousy] I've never met him. Canelo Alvarez at the Canelo vs. Munguia pre-fight event

This is in light of Wards’ claims on the Stephen A Smith Show for ESPN that he picks and chooses who he fights. Speaking on the Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM, he nudged somewhat similar sentiments. Knocking out Sergey Kovalev, Alvarez never advanced to the light heavyweight division when Ward was still active. Hence, he is still critical of the Mexican’s sentiments.

Speaking at the Canelo-Munguia pre-fight press conference, Alvarez also took free jabs at all and sundry. Fighting at least one last time from PBC, he snubbed Benavidez as “unworthy” to contend for the undisputed super middleweight gold; a move even critiqued by legend Mike Tyson. Now, it remains to be seen how far his issue with Ward stretches.

Andre Ward rips Canelo Alvarez for ducking him

David Benavidez remains a mandatory challenger for the self-proclaimed king of boxing, Canelo Alvarez’s title golds. However, the latter has been very negligent on the matter, while also instigating that he isn’t ducking. Now, he veers to Jaime Munguia as the next opponent. The undisputed super middleweight champ hasn’t boxed a fellow Mexican since Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2017.

He has also made huge money demands to face Mexican-American peer David Benavidez, deeming him unworthy. Here’s what veteran boxer Andre Ward had to say about it all recently –

Ward hinted that he would end his retirement if Alvarez manned up to hash it out with him; a prospect he doesn’t believe is possible. While briefly splintering away from Al Haymon’s PBC, Alvarez was guaranteed a $55 million fight purse for Benavidez. With that stretching out, Wards’ beliefs have only solidified further.

Alvarez meets his next opponent on Saturday, May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, in a PBC Pay-Per-View showdown on Prime Video (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT). Whether or not he would give other Mexican peers a chance after that, is anyone’s guess. As for Andre Ward, he might be out of the game but his skills aren’t dulled yet when it comes to an Alvarez-shaped opponent.
