Rangers Skipper Falls Short of Award
USA TODAY Sports

Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy was beaten out by Baltimore Orioles skipper Brandon Hyde for the American League Manager of the Year Award on Tuesday.

Hyde, who led the Orioles to an American League-best 101 wins, claimed the award, which was voted upon by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Voting reflected regular-season performance.

The Rangers swept Baltimore 3-0 in the AL Division Series on their way to the first World Series title in franchise history.

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash was the third finalist. Texas swept the Rays 2-0 in the Wild Card round.

Bochy led the Rangers to a 22-win turnaround in 2023 (90-72) in his first season at the helm. They were tied for the lead with the Houston Astros in the AL West, but lost the tiebreaker and made the playoffs as a Wild Card team.

After a three-year absence after leaving the game in 2019, Bochy returned to the dugout in 2023 for his first season as Rangers manager, guiding Texas to the largest increase in regular-season winning percentage from 2022-23 among MLB clubs.

The Rangers won every road game they played in the postseason as Bochy won his fourth World Series as a manager. He led the San Francisco Giants to titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

In spite of Bochy’s incredible success as a manager, he has only one Manager of the Year award to his credit. He won it in 1996 after taking the San Diego Padres to the World Series.

He was an NL finalist in 2012 and in 2014. He finished third both times.

Earlier this week, Rangers third baseman Josh Jung finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting, won by Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson. Marcus Semien and Corey Seager will find out if either of them were able to overtake Shohei Ohtani for AL MVP on Thursday.
